Welcome to this lovely Berkeley tiny house on wheels

“Thoreau, eat your heart out,” says the advertisement for this tiny house on Airbnb, the bed and breakfast Web site. The ad also says, aptly, that guests who consider renting this unique little house might want to think of it as “luxurious pioneering.” Well, that's one way to put it.
Thoreau, of course, refers to Henry David Thoreau, a naturalist, writer and transcendentalist thinker (that's kind of like a European version of Zen), whose most famous work concerned living next to Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts, in the first half of the 1800s.

This house is on the opposite end of the continent, in Berkley, California, but Thoreau might have felt at home in the tiny home that features a romantic, star-lovers skylight above the bedroom loft, on-demand hot water, a tiny office, sleeping quarters for three and a composting toilet. It is also situated in a backyard replete with fruit trees and in close proximity to Berkley University, where he might have found some scholarly companionship at the school's College of Natural Resources.
But let's take a look at this beautiful, two-story tiny home with the uniquely arched roof. See what you think:
The arched roof has no "hips" like a barn roof. Instead, it is smoothly rounded, although it has a barely noticeable peak at the top created by the center roof beam.
There are few clues to tell you how small this house is, but even in the tiny house community this would be considered small. Its redeeming feature is the second story loft, which is not a half-sized loft. Instead, it's a full-sized second story with the only missing piece from the floor being a hole wide enough for a ladder and someone climbing through.
This view of the master bedroom hints at the extent of the upstairs loft. The hatch is large enough for a sizable occupant to climb through comfortably. On the right is a set of shelves that separates the larger bedroom with the queen sized mattress from a smaller space with a single mattress.
This other view of the master bedroom gives you a terrific look at the arched ceiling. You can also see a brighter section of the roof on the left. That's the skylight, which you can't actually see because it's behind one of the arched ceiling joists.
This view shows you the second bed upstairs.
Aside from the bathroom and office, the downstairs area is pretty much one room ... a combination kitchen and sitting room.
This tiny home is used as a rental, which explains the minimal amount of personal stuff in these photos. The kitchen has a two-burner propane stove, but the house is within walking distance of downtown Berkley, Calif. So, fine restaurants are not far away.
Is there a table and a chair missing? The table that is visible in a previous photo is now folded against the wall on the left. Where's the chair? It's the rust-colored item tucked against the wall under the kitchen counter, just to the left of the kitchen cabinets.
An efficiency bathroom with a composting toilet. That means covering deposits with a layer of sawdust, which masks the smell.
You can see behind the wall on the right is the shower, although mostly what you can see is the top of the shower curtain.

This reverse view of the downstairs (the photographer is standing in the kitchen) shows the office and bathroom space. The office desk is in view. The bathroom takes up only half of the space behind the wall; it's very tiny with just enough room for the toilet and the shower.
