San Mateo woman builds a tiny home for homeless friend

Lisa Kolvites of San Mateo, Calif., is building a tiny home in her driveway for a friend. According to NBC Bay Area, Kolvites began building the home in November of 2015 and hopes to have it completed by the summer of 2016. The recipient of her tiny home is a friend by the name of Steve Strackbein.
Strackbein is a homeless man who lives on the streets of San Francisco whom Kolvites regularly visits with and takes food to. Strackbein and Kolvites met at the Community Arts Program where, according to The California Report, Kolvites volunteers, teaching sewing for any who want to learn. When Strackbein lost his home later on, Kolvites kept the friendship going. Each night Strackbein constructs a temporary shelter in which to sleep.

Motivated to help provide a more permanent home for Strackbein, NBC states that Kolvites is building the tiny home of mostly reclaimed and recycled materials. Strackbein is also helping with the project by collecting supplies from the streets of San Francisco and giving them to Kolvites when she visits. Kolvites is not a builder, but is determined to construct a home for her friend. She has received some help from one friend, but overall, the home is her own work.
Kolvites has been bothered by the fact that Strackbein has no home and that all he has is carried in a shopping cart. Rather than just being bothered, she has allowed his problems to move her to action. According to Kolvites, "Every time I go to see him, I cry on the way home." When the home is delivered to Strackbein, he will not be the only person who is rejoicing. As Kolvites put it, "I see someone who needs. If I can, I help."
